Are Your Medical Records Disaster Ready?
This time of year often reminds us that no setting in the world is free from the threat of a natural disaster. Now is the time to ask the question: Are your records disaster ready?
Whether it’s tornadoes through the Midwest, hurricanes in coastal regions, or flooding in low areas, your files may risk the chance of being destroyed.
Ask yourself:
- What safeguards does my facility have in case of a fire?
- Are my records stored in regions prone to hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods? If yes, what protection do my files have from these disasters?
- Are my files fully HIPAA compliant?
- If something does happen, what is my emergency plan?
In the case of any disaster, medical records storage in a temperature and humidity controlled underground facility is one of the best ways to protect your documents.
Don’t forget: Storage and protection do not apply only to paper documents. If electronic data or backup storage is near a threatened area, then they too are threatened.
